The McCarthy Road is sixty miles of gravel that used to be a railroad bed and it will rattle something loose in your vehicle and possibly in your worldview. You come out the other end in McCarthy, population small and completely unbothered, with Kennecott just up the hill and the whole of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve spreading out in every direction like it forgot to stop.

Wrangell-St. Elias is thirteen million acres. Read that again. The Bagley Icefield alone is one of the largest non-polar icefields on the planet. The Nabesna Road cuts into the northern reaches of the park through boreal forest and wetland and the kind of quiet that actually has texture to it. Mount St. Elias, the second highest peak in the United States, just sits there in the background being enormous while you try to process the rest of it.

People come here to fly over glaciers, to backpack routes with no trail markers and no crowds, to tour the Kennecott Mines National Historic Landmark and learn about the copper boom that built and then abandoned a whole company town inside what is now a national park. The Chitina River valley pulls rafters and anglers. The whole park pulls people who have run out of ways to be impressed by normal things.

Strange Allies built this one for that crowd. The graphic is heavy and worn, Wrangell arched big in cracked varsity type, St. Elias blocked below in a framed stamp. It reads like a jersey for a sport played at altitude with no referees.
