Winter on the North Shore of O'ahu is something that happens to you. You don't observe it. You don't spectate it from a safe distance and process it later. The swells come out of the North Pacific and hit Sunset Beach and Banzai Pipeline and they do not ask permission from anyone. The sound alone changes the atmosphere of the whole area for months.

Haleiwa town anchors the whole stretch and it has been doing so for a long time. The shops, the shave ice, the old bridge, the way everybody who lives there seems to know exactly what they have and treats it accordingly. Haleiwa Arts Festival brings a different energy every July. The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing runs from November into December and the entire island shows up.

The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational only runs when Waimea Bay hits a certain threshold. When it does, tens of thousands of people line the shore and watch the best big wave surfers in the world do things that should not be physically possible. It has happened a handful of times in forty years. People who were there for even one running carry it with them permanently.
