There is a kind of person the city makes over time. Not the one from the movies. The real one. The one who knows which bodega is actually open at 3am and which one just has the lights on. The one who has opinions about the Q train and also about which Governors Ball lineup actually delivered and which one was just a poster that looked good.

The Beastie Boys were doing something so specifically New York that it took the rest of the country a few years to catch up. LCD Soundsystem made the art-kid party scene feel genuinely important. The Strokes made the Lower East Side into a sound. None of this happened in spite of the city. It happened because of it.

NYU Tisch and SVA and The New School keep cycling new people into the visual and sonic conversation. The Bushwick gallery openings on a Saturday night draw a crowd that is equal parts serious and completely unhinged and that balance is exactly correct. Afropunk Brooklyn takes Commodore Barry Park and turns it into something that needs to be witnessed in person. Electric Zoo does something different entirely out on Randall's Island.

The Prospect Park drum circle on a Sunday afternoon. The High Line when you need to reset. The Bronx, which invented something that the entire world calls its own now and which still does not get the square footage of credit it deserves.
