Kalaupapa sits at the base of the tallest sea cliffs in the world and carries a history so layered and human that visiting it changes how you think about isolation, community, and resilience all at once. Maunaloa up on the west end is barely a town and completely itself. The east side past Halawa Valley goes feral and green in a way that makes you question every decision that led you to live somewhere with a commute.
