There are no roads into Kobuk Valley National Park. Let that sit for a second. The Kobuk River moves through the valley and people float it in canoes and rafts, fishing for sheefish and watching caribou migrations cross the water in numbers that make you feel like you wandered into another century.

The Inupiaq communities along the river, including Kobuk and Shungnak, have lived in this valley for thousands of years. The land holds that kind of weight. You feel it when you're out there, the silence and the scale of it, the way the dunes glow in the midnight sun and nothing about it makes logical sense.
