You don't stumble into Haleakalā. You commit to it. The alarm goes off before the rest of Maui is awake, you leave Kula or Makawao while it's still fully dark, and you climb. The road to the summit of Haleakalā National Park has thirty switchbacks and the temperature drops fast and by the time you're at the top you are standing in the clouds looking down at an island that seems impossibly far below.

The crater floor stretches out below the summit in reds and grays and rust, a volcanic landscape that NASA once used for Mars rover testing. The Sliding Sands Trail drops you into the basin and the hiking is otherworldly in the most literal possible sense.

Lower down, the Kipahulu district along the Road to Hana holds the Pools of Ohe'o and rainforest so dense and green it operates on different logic than the summit. Same park, completely different planet. Hana town sits nearby, quiet and real in a way the rest of the tourist infrastructure on Maui is not.
