Chicago has a way of making everything personal. The Cubs versus Sox argument is not really about baseball. It is about which part of the city made you, and that question has a real answer that people take seriously for their entire lives. Bridgeport means something different than Bronzeville. Pilsen is not Wicker Park. Logan Square in 2010 is not Logan Square now and the people who were there for both versions will tell you exactly what changed and exactly what did not.

That level of specificity is what Strange Allies was thinking about.

The front of this hat reads Chicago in wide varsity block letters, white embroidery on red, the kind of lettering that belongs on a fieldhouse in Englewood or a rec center in Roseland that has been running youth leagues since before anyone currently running them was born. The retro script underneath says "Every block has a story." Not every neighborhood, not every district. Every block. Because that is the actual unit of measurement in this city. Your block. The one you grew up on. The one you claimed.

Loyola students riding the Red Line know what that means. So does the Northwestern kid who did an internship in the Loop and accidentally fell in love with Ukrainian Village. So does the Bears season ticket holder who has been parking in the same spot on the same street outside Soldier Field for twenty years and knows the family that owns the lot by name.

The snapback is structured, holds its shape, does not quit on you. The trucker breathes through the mesh panels in a way that matters in August when the lakefront is not doing what you hoped. The dad hat is unstructured and low profile, the kind of thing you wear to a White Sox day game when you want to be comfortable but you still want to represent.

As a souvenir it carries actual Chicago in it. Not the architecture boat tour version. The real one.
