Berlin does not care if you were born here or if you showed up with two bags and a sublet in Friedrichshain and never left. The city absorbs people. It has been doing it for decades. It takes the architecture student from Technische Universität Berlin and the Hertha BSC supporter who grew up in Wedding and the artist who came for a residency in 2011 and is somehow still here, and it makes all of them Berliners. Not because the city is welcoming exactly. Because it is magnetic.

Strange Allies made this hat for all of them.

Berlin hits the front in thick varsity block letters, the kind of lettering that belongs on a sports hall wall in Spandau or a gymnasium in Tempelhof that has not been renovated since reunification. Below it, in a retro script that reads like something off a Kiez bar awning, it says "Every block has a story." Kreuzberg has one that would fill several books. So does Lichtenberg. So does every side street in Marzahn that nobody from the west side ever bothered to learn.

You already know which block is yours.

The snapback holds its structure. The trucker moves air. The dad hat lays flat and low profile and unstructured, the kind of thing you put on when you are not thinking about what you are wearing but you still want to look like you know something other people do not.

Take it to an Alba Berlin game. Wear it on the U-Bahn. Pack it for the trip back to wherever you came from before Berlin got into your bloodstream. As a souvenir it carries actual weight because it is not a photograph of the Brandenburg Gate on a magnet. It is a statement about the city that only people who understand the city will fully read.

That is the whole point.
