Art for the Exhausted

There is a long tradition of putting words on walls.

Church announcements. Revolutionary slogans. Zine clippings taped above desks in college dorms and union halls and living rooms in cities trying to figure out what came next. The wall was always a surface for the things you needed to see every day to remember where you stood.

It goes in apartments in Seattle and Detroit and Baltimore and Tucson where people are paying attention and getting tired and paying attention anyway. In home offices where the ongoing work of surviving the current political moment happens between Zoom calls and dinner prep and trying not to read the comments. Above the bed in a studio apartment where someone is budgeting their prescriptions against their rent.

The right-wing project in America has been running long enough that it no longer pretends to be subtle. Medicaid getting cut. Environmental protections being stripped. The agencies that exist to keep food and water and workplaces safe being hollowed out by people who believe regulation is the real problem. Wages that have not kept up with anything since the 1970s while the people making those decisions get another round of tax cuts.

You come home from all of it.

And the print is there on the wall, saying the thing you have been saying in your head since breakfast. Not asking anything from you. Not demanding you be angrier or calmer or more strategic about your response. Just acknowledging that yes, it is genuinely a lot, and also yes, it will eventually end, and also yes, holy fuck.

In gallery homes in Silver Lake and Logan Square and Prospect Heights and Capitol Hill, people put things on their walls that say something about how they actually think. This is one of those things.
